Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead (May-1995)
Director: Gary Fleder Writer: Scott Rosenberg Keywords: Crime
REVIEWS Review by chad (posted on 8-Dec-2007) Heartbreaking tale of a wiseguy who tries to go straight by investing in a video-legacy business. The local "capo" buys the markers to his debts and strong-arms him into doing him a personal favor. The favor consists of "making-an-offer-he-can't-refuse" to the boyfriend of the capo's ex-girlfriend. Jimmy "the Saint" Tosnia (Andy Garcia) recruits a crew of ex-con misfits to deliver the message. Two of the crew's members over-react and whack the guy they were only supposed to "tune-up", as well as the love-object of the capo's son. This pretty much seals their fate and the capo takes out a contract on the crew, and ultimately on Jimmy the Saint Tosnia because of his defense of his crew, and his own refusal to "get out of Denver". The secondary plot is the heartbreak of Jimmy the Saint Tosnia finally finding the woman of his dreams and realizing he is not going to live to marry her.
Very quirky, original, and well-written crime-drama/love-story.
Recommend it to all my friends and I have been intensely hunting for a DVD copy to give (along with "Benny & Joon", "Don Juan de Marco", "Somewhere in Time", "Starman", "A Pyromaniac's Love Story", "Like Water for Chocolate", "They Might Be Giants" -the movie- not the band!-, "Brazil" and "Harrison Bergeron"-(the latter I have also not found on DVD yet!- I told you: Quirky Love Stories!) to my own targeted Love. A movie that will make even the toughest, burliest guy "misty" more than once. I highly recommend IT and the other movies I mentioned here!
