Comprising nine anime-style short films -- four written by Andy and Lana Wachowski -- The Animatrix is an animated prequel to the Matrix trilogy, detailing the beginnings of the cataclysmic conflict between humanity and self-aware machines, origin stories for several important Matrix characters, and the creation of the "Matrix" reality simulator itself.
