Reach for the Sky (15-Oct-1956)
Director: Lewis Gilbert Writers: Lewis Gilbert; Vernon Harris Based on a book: Reach for the Sky by Paul Brickhill
REVIEWS Review by Nigel Williamson (posted on 1-Aug-2008) A cracking biography of Douglas Bader, who, despite having lost both his legs in a flying accident in the Thirties, went on to become one of the Royal Air Force's fighter aces during The Battle of Britain, flying Spitfire's against the Luftwaffe as a squadron and then Wing Commander, and went on to form the 'big-wing' tactic that proved so successful against the german air forces. Bader was the pilot that led the victory fly-past over London of the RAF who had defended it so well. Ken More plays the part with typical english gung-ho and RAF plumminess, epitomising all the dash and verve the English were so in need of in the stark realities of post-war recovery in Britain. Watch this film to see how REAL heroes were made(or how the English thought they were, anyway!)
