Partido Revolucionario Institucional

POLITICAL PARTY

The Institutional Revolutionary Party, known by its Spanish initials PRI, is a centrist political party in Mexico that maintained a stranglehold over the nation for over 70 years.

Starting as a revolutionary party focused on protecting the rights of the poor in the wake of the Mexican Revolution, PRI went on to symbolize corruption, electoral fraud, and privatization of previously nationalized industries.

PRI's leftist current schismed into a new party, Partido de la Revolución Democratica (PRD) shortly after the 1988 presidential elections. Widespread voter fraud swept PRI's candidate Carlos Salinas to the presidency even after exit polls predicted the triumph of the PRD's founder, Cuauhtemoc Cardenas.

The economic crisis of the 1970s/1980s saw the growth of a strong rightist opposition to PRI in the form of the Partido Accion Nacional (PAN), drawing funding mostly from businessmen in the north of the country.

1989 saw the first non-PRI state governorship in many decades in Baja California. With 2000 came the first non-PRI president in 70 years in the form of PAN's Vicente Fox.
