[1] When Mary Garden applied for US citizenship in 1924, she filled out the paperwork stating that she was was born in 1877. This is false, as it contradicts documentation at the Aberdeen hospital in which she was born in, which indicates 1874. In a contemporary report, "Mary Garden Seeks Citizenship Here", The New York Times, 9 April 1924, Mary's father is quoted as saying that this step was unnecessary as Mary had become a citizen while a minor child when his parents were naturalized. This too is false, since that naturalization occurred in 1901, when Mary was 27 years old (or 24 if you believe her fib).
