With financial backing from his father, a wealthy banker, Gerard Philips founded Philips & Company (now Royal Philips Electronics) on 18 May 1891 as a manufacturer of incandescent lamps. He had technical knowledge but no business expertise, and the company teetered near bankruptcy for several years, until Gerard's younger brother Anton, who had experience working at a brokerage firm, joined the company in 1895. Karl Marx was their cousin by marriage, after he wed Jenny von Westphalen, a niece of Philips' father.
