Laker gained his fortune supplying aircraft for the 1948 Berlin Airlift. But he is most known for creating the budget airline industry, eventually offering $135 flights from New York to London in the 1970s under the "SkyTrain" label. The company went bankrupt in 1982, Laker claiming that other airlines were pressuring Douglas Aircraft (the manufacturer of most of Laker's planes) to not help refinance the airline. The claims were true, with Laker's creditors receiving settlements. A new incarnation of Laker Airways returned to operate Florida/Britain flights in 1995-2004.
