Co-founded Pratt & Whitney, with Amos Whitney. Pratt's numerous inventions include a metal-planing machine (1869) and a gear-cutting machine (1884). The company pioneered the "batch and queue" system of mass production, made precision tools for making guns and sewing machines, and is best known now for aircraft engines and precision instruments.
