Executive summary: SNL alumnus In high school, Jay Mohr was a wrestler and a cut-up, and after graduating he performed stand-up comedy. Unlike many struggling comics, Mohr was quickly able to make a living at it, and at 21 he moved to New York. Less than a year and a half after that, he was picked up for Saturday Night Live. During his time on SNL (1993-1995) Mohr did a drop-dead Christopher Walken, a pretty good Sean Penn, and admitted plagiarizing a sketch that aired, about an Irish bartender.
Mohr has suffered panic attacks, and for a long time he self-medicated with marijuana and alcohol. He now takes prescription anti-anxiety meds. He starred in the short-lived but flamboyantly crude Fox drama Action, playing a movie dealmaker, with Illeana Douglas as a hooker he hires as a senior executive. Shortly after Action was cancelled, Mohr signed a five-picture deal with Disney.
Mohr was the host and executive producer of Last Comic Standing, an American Idolesque competition for comedians, until it was cancelled in 2004 amid complaints that the show had been rigged. Celebrity judge Drew Carey said, "I thought it was crooked and dishonest. It was like somebody at NBC cast the show ahead of the event." It later came out that one of the contestants was writing for Mohr's other show, Mohr Sports, and another was dating one of the rotating "guest judges".
