Bernie SandersAKA Bernard Sanders

Born: 8-Sep-1941
Birthplace: Brooklyn, NY

Gender: Male
Religion: Jewish
Race or Ethnicity: White
Sexual orientation: Straight
Occupation: Politician
Party Affiliation: Independent [1]

Nationality: United States
Executive summary: US Senator from Vermont

Former carpenter and writer elected Mayor of Burlington VT in 1981, then elected to Congress in 1991 and to the U.S. Senate in 2007. Campaigned as an independent, and caucuses with the Democrats. As a college student, he participated in the 1963 March on Washington, and worked as an organizer with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. Raised in Brooklyn, which still resonates in his accent, but has called Vermont home since 1964.

Announced his candidacy for President on 30 April 2015, seeking the Democratic Party's nomination and opposing former Sen. Hillary Clinton. His Presidential run could make right-wing heads explode -- numerous conservatives have described Barack Obama as a "socialist," but there is no need for hyperbole with Sanders; he describes his own politics as "democratic socialism."

"I think we need people in leadership roles in the House and the Senate and governors' chairs, in the White House, who are prepared to stand up and say, 'You know what? This country belongs to all of the people: the waiters and the waitresses who are trying to make it on low incomes, they have a right to see their kids go to college and all people, that the United States is going to join the rest of the industrialized world in guaranteed health care to all people as a right and not any longer be the only country, major country on earth that does not guarantee that right, that all kids regardless of income have the right to a college education, that we need a tax system which in fact makes it very clear that the wealthy and large corporations are going to start paying their fair share of taxes, that we're going to have real campaign finance reform so that the Koch brothers and other billionaires cannot buy elections, that we're going to overturn Citizens United.'

Do you think that's Hillary Clinton's agenda? I don't think so."
