Highly respected Big Band and West Coast experimental drummer. He was drummer for Stan Kenton in 1946-47, 1947-48, and 1950-51, and drummer for Woody Herman in 1949. After 1955 Manne also made live appearances as Shelly Manne and His Men. He owned the LA jazz nightclub, Shelly's Manne-Hole, 1960-74.
