Many birthdays exist for Pola, but records in Poland indicate 1894, not the oft-quoted 1897 or her claimed 1899 ("last day of the century.") Hitler was a big fan, and Pola traveled to Germany in the 1930's to work after American work dried up for her. Banned from filmmaking by Goebbels for "potential Jewish ancestry", a ban that Hitler personally withdrew. Left Germany after the outbreak of war, and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1951. A multiply-ghostwritten biography, Memoirs of a Star, was published by Doubleday in 1970.
