Growing up in Villa Palmera, Omar was a preacher for four years and a member of the Christian Rappers. Subsequently, Omar left the church due to a growing disillusionment documented in his song "Aunque te Fuiste". Don Omar was charged with possession of a firearm in 2005, however, in agreement with the program Scandal TV (Telefutura), a court of Carolina, Puerto Rico, suppressed the evidence against the singer. In 2006, Don Omar was invited to participate in a program against School Desertion by Governor of Puerto Rico Aníbal Acevedo-Vilá, despite having never finished high school himself. However, the Secretary of Education vetoed this invitation due to Omar's sexually explicit lyrics.
