Occupation: Business

Executive summary: CEO of Hewlett-Packard, 2010-11

Leo Apotheker was named chief executive officer of Hewlett-Packard effective 1 November 2010, succeeding Mark Hurd. Apotheker's appointment was considered to be a bit "outside the box" — he had been forced out in his previous job as CEO of the German software firm SAP after instituting a sharp price increase across the company's product line, leading to a slump in sales and a spike in complaints.

According to CNET, Apotheker's base pay with HP was $1.2M per year, and he also received 76,000 shares of restricted stock, a "signing bonus" of $4M, and an additional $4.6M to cover his moving expenses from Europe. He is fluent in Dutch, English, French, German, and Hebrew, but unable to write software code, and he was the first non-American to head HP. He was fired after less than a year on the job, given a $23M golden parachute, and replaced by Meg Whitman.
