At 15, Bo Derek was stunningly gorgeous, and was approached on several occasions by Hollywood types who thought she could be a actress. At one of her earliest auditions, she met John Derek -- now nearly forgotten, but then a dashing Hollywood star only a decade past his prime, and 30 years older than she. She and Derek began their affair on the set of a horrid but torrid film he directed and she starred in, And Once Upon a Love. They married a few years later, after he divorced Linda Evans. As for And Once Upon a Love, it was so awful it wasn't released until eight years later (retitled Fantasies), after Bo Derek had achieved fame with 10.

John Derek managed her career, turning down most of the big-studio offers that came in the wake of 10, including the Jessica Lange role in the 1976 King Kong. Instead, he wrote and directed his wife in Tarzan the Ape Man with Richard Harris and John Phillip Law, the soft-core Bolero, and Ghosts Can't Do It with Anthony Quinn. For Tarzan, Bo Derek won the Razzie as Worst Actress of 1981.

Her stepfather was stuntman Bobby Bass, who was battered in films from Michael Crichton's Westworld to Schwarzenegger's End of Days.

Politically, Derek is a Republican, and campaigned for George W. Bush in the 2000 and 2004 elections.

Her childhood bedroom was filled with what she calls "horse porn", pictures of horses running and jumping. As a young girl she pretended to be a horse. Her autobiography is titled Riding Lessons: Everything that Matters In Life I Learned from Horses. She owns several horses, and has testified before Congress in favor of laws that would ban the export of horsemeat. "As a horse owner, I was shocked," Derek said. "We don't use horses any longer for pet food so why are we sending them over to other countries?"
