As a young girl, she sang and danced as part of her church congregation's performing troupe. At ten, she was Annie in a stage production of the musical. At 14, she was "discovered" by one-time Monkee Micky Dolenz, who recommended her for a London production of The Pajama Game. She later starred on stage in 42nd Street, then made her film debut in Scheherazade, a low-budget retelling of "1001 Nights". In the early 1990s, she was on a popular show on Yorkshire Television, The Darling Buds of May. She was offered small roles in mediocre films (Christopher Columbus: The Discovery, Splitting Heirs), then larger roles in marginally better movies (The Phantom with Billy Zane, and The Mask of Zorro with Antonio Banderas), and then Entrapment, a crime thriller where she played opposite Sean Connery. Since then she has found better roles, in films that include Traffic with Benicio Del Toro, High Fidelity with John Cusack, and The Terminal with Tom Hanks. She won an Oscar as Best Supporting Actress for Chicago, in which she also sang and danced.
