Charles Lindbergh, Jr., was kidnapped from his Hopewell, NJ, home in 1932 and held for $50,000 ransom. Even though the money was paid, the son was not returned and was eventually found dead near the Lindbergh home, death coming from apparent blunt trauma to the head. German-American carpenter Bruno Hauptmann was arrested after spending some of the ransom money at a gas station. He was convicted on circumstancial evidence and executed.
