Sherwin and another Republican associate, fund-raiser William C. Loughran, were convicted of bribery and extortion. Two more indictments followed in April the following year for conspirary and bribery, and still more in May, including a former New Jersey State Treasurer. Some of these charges touched on the operation of his political campaigns. Thus it became that Cahill lost the 1973 Republican nomination and retired from politics.
