While stationed at the British Embassy in Washington DC, Maclean reported to the Russians on details regarding the development of atomic weapons by the US. Most importantly, he informed Moscow of the meagre quantities of Uranium available to the Americans. Prior to his unmasking, he fled to the Soviet Union in 1951, where he worked as an economist. He died there in 1983.
