Certified radiological technician who served more than a decade in the Arizona state legislature and six years on the Maricopa County (Phoenix area) Board of Supervisors. Elected Secretary of State in 2002, and elevated to Governor of Arizona after President Barack Obama appointed then-Governor Janet Napolitano to become US Secretary of Homeland Security in 2009.

Came to some national attention in 2010 for signing a tough anti-immigration law, making it a crime to be in the USA illegally and empowering state and local police to enforce federal immigration laws. Within weeks after the law took effect, portions of it were ruled unconstitutional.
