Prior to his TV show, Judge Joe Brown was best known for presiding over the last hearings for James Earl Ray in 1997, as Ray tried to establish that he had been coerced into pleading guilty in the assassination of Martin Luther King. Brown was removed from the case on 6 March 1997, when the Court of Criminal Appeals ruled that Judge Brown's decisions appeared to be biased in Ray's favor. No replacement judge was ever appointed, and Ray died the following year.

Brown's TV judge show was cancelled in 2014.
