Physicist Robert L. Mills was a 27-year-old graduate student when, working with eventual Nobel laureate Chen Ning Yang, he proposed a new approach to gauge theories in non-abelian symmetry groups. Now called Yang-Mills fields, their equation added greatly to scientists' understanding of how subatomic particles interact, and led to numerous subsequent developments in subatomic physics. He later taught for decades at Ohio State University.
