| Julia Stiles AKA Julia O'Hara Stiles
Born: 28-Mar-1981 Birthplace: New York City
Gender: Female Race or Ethnicity: White Sexual orientation: Straight Occupation: Actor Nationality: United States Executive summary: 10 Things I Hate About You Julia Stiles studied dance and theater as a child, and began appearing on stage in various productions of New York's Ridge Theater when she was 11. At 12 she appeared in a few episodes of PBS's Ghostwriter. She was a frequent writer for ZuZu, a children's magazine, and at 16 she co-wrote a play, The Anarchist's Daughter, which was chosen as one of 12 scripts to be included in the Sundance Institute's 1997 Writers Lab. At 17, after a few small film roles, she auditioned for the bizarre thriller Wicked, then wrote an impassioned letter to the director explaining why she was perfect for the lead, and received the part. She was featured prominently in NBC's 1999 mini-series The '60s with Jerry O'Connell. Her red-white-and-blue peace-sign painted face was basically the show's logo, filling the screen in thousands of commercials and posters.
Stiles has starred in three youth-oriented Shakespeare films, 10 Things I Hate About You (from The Taming of the Shrew), O (from Othello), and Hamlet among the skyscrapers with Ethan Hawke. She has also played a pretty young spy in The Bourne Identity and The Bourne Supremacy with Matt Damon, appeared in the ensemble chick flick Mona Lisa Smile with Julia Roberts, and played the mother of the Anti-Christ in The Omen with Liev Schreiber.
Stiles is as political as anyone in Hollywood. She is active with MoveOn, has built houses with Habitat for Humanity, and has toured Pennsylvania juvenile detention facilities on behalf of Amnesty International. She is no longer a vegan, because she became anemic when travel and filming made it difficult to obtain proper nutrition without meat and milk. She now says she is a vegetarian.
Her mother is a potter, her father teaches grade school in Harlem, and both are unapologetic '60s-era radicals. They run a ceramics store on New York's Bleeker Street.
