Christian missionary and US spy in China, taken prisoner eleven days after V-J day by Communist soldiers, who shot him for refusing to disarm. Never famous in life, he became the namesake of the John Birch Society, a conservative Christian anti-communist organization created 9 December 1958, thirteen years after his death.
