Former Attorney General of Colorado, elected to the US Senate in 2004, defeating Pete Coors to succeed retiring Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell. Appointed Secretary of the Interior by President Barack Obama in 2009, despite a generally lukewarm record on environmental issues. As Senator in 2006, voted to allow increased offshore oil drilling in the Gulf Coast, and as Secretary of the Interior he oversaw the governmental response to the months-long British Petroleum oil gusher in the Gulf in 2010.
