Executive summary: Founder, Pitchfork

Former record store clerk Ryan Schreiber founded his music review website Pitchfork in 1995, soon after graduating from high school. After selling his record collection on eBay, Schreiber quit Minnesota for Chicago, taking his affection for musical muckraking full-time. In search of "magic coolness", Schreiber and his cohorts listen through every generic Midwestern rock record, then put pencil to pad with the incomprehensible zeal of an unfulfilled creative writing major. When in an early review he referred to Scott Weiland as "a drug-addled sonofabitch that should have OD'ed a long time ago" Schreiber trod on dangerous ground as grunge still held sway with provincials famed for their irascibility.

With Pitchfork, Schreiber tapped into the hunger to discover music uncontaminated by the commerce machine, and promises of "crash-landing into a deliquescent pop lullaby" and "expansive, pillowy bed[s] of ethereal violins" drew many hipsters to the rocks. A glowing review hitting high on Pitchfork's ten point scale is almost certain to engineer a hit, propelling musicians to heights of indie stardom until the majors come calling. Tragically, due to their nature, Pitchfork readers must repudiate their allegiance to the website with guarded attacks and back-handed compliments.

Drawn by the Telluric currents of hipsterdom, Schreiber has relocated to Brooklyn.
