Betty Davis is Mary Dwight, a hostess in gangster Johnny Vanning's 1930s clip joint, "The Club Intimate." A patron runs up a gambling debt he can't pay, and ends up dead; Mary's name is found written on a matchbox cover but won't testify. Then Mary's sister visits from college, and Vanning accidentally kills her. Now, Mary is a bit more willing to testify, "X" freshly carved on her cheek, making her a "Marked Woman." Humphrey Bogart is District Attorney David Graham.
