Snow Flower and the Secret Fan (15-Jul-2011)|
Director: Wayne Wang
Writers: Ron Bass; Michael K. Ray; Angela Workman
From novel by: Lisa See
Historical drama focuses on a friendship between two young women in 19th-century China and its effect on the present day.
Snow Flower and Lily, two seven-year old girls living in 19th-century China, find themselves paired together as laotong -- or "old sames" -- a cultural norm that stipulates that they will exist together for eternity. Communicating with each other through improvised means despite their isolation from each other at the hands of their respective families, their story is told in parallel with that of Nina and Sophia, the laotong's descendants and childhood friends who struggle to maintain their bond in the face of a rapidly-modernizing People's Republic of China.
