As WWI breaks out, hard drinking riverboat captain Charlie Allnut rescues Rose Sayer, a prim Methodist missionary, after her brother is killed by Germans. His only interest is in surviving the war; she convinces him to attack a German warship. The first American production to be filmed on location in Africa. Won Oscars for Best Actor and Best Actress; received nominations for Best Director and Best Screenplay. Entered 1994 into the National Film Registry.
