A rebel faction in Russia armed with nuclear missiles is threatening to use them against both the United States and Russia herself. The submarine USS Alabama receives orders to preemptively destroy the rebel position, but then the submarine receives an incomplete transmission, after which communication is lost. The experienced captain, Gene Hackman, wants to carry out orders, but his younger executive officer, Denzel Washington, refuses, desiring clarification of the second order. Tense and thought-provoking post-Cold War thriller.
