ORGANIZATION
Founded 17 September 1920 in Canton, Ohio, merging seven semi-professional leagues into what was called the American Professional Football Association. Renamed the National Football League in 1922. A rival circuit, the American Football League, began play in 1960, and merged into the NFL in 1970.
