Robert Gould Shaw distinguishes himself in battle and is promoted Colonel, and appointed commander of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry, the first all-black fighting regiment. Shaw's superiors have no intention of letting his forces into the fighting, but opportunities arise and the 54th leads an assault on a Confederate stronghold near Charleston, Fort Wagner. Won Oscars for Best Supporting Actor, Best Cinematography, and Best Sound; received additional nominations for Best Set Decoration and Best Editing.
