Dr. Charles Forbin has built a supercomputer for the US military, "Colossus", to manage the West's nuclear defenses; similarly, the Soviets have constructed "Guardian." After Colossus detects the existence of Guardian, it requests and receives interconnection with its peer. But nobody knows what these machines are saying to each other, and their human masters grow reluctant of allowing them to continue communicating. Received a Hugo nomination for Best Dramatic Presentation.
