REVIEWS Review by anonymous (posted on 1-Aug-2005) Charley Varrick (1973) is a
classic hard boiled crime drama starring Walter Mathau as the title
character. He's a "professional" who wants to do one last gig before he
retires for good. During his last gig, his crew (including Andrew
"Andy" Robinson) rob a podunk bank. But unknown to them, it's a drop
off point for some real heavy gangsters. When the syndicate finds out
they were robbed, they contact a local boss (John Vernon) who sends out
one of his meanest dudes (Joe Don Baker) to sniff out the robbers.
Directed by Don Siegal. A classic movie that inspired a famous line
from Pulp Fiction. John Vernon tells the bank president that his
employers will find out who did it and work them over with "a pair of
pliers and a blow torch". It's was also cool to see Walter Matthau play
an old school professional who doesn't play around and just wants to
get the job done with a streak of bad ass attitude. Will the thugs find
out who robbed them? What will happen when J.D. Baker and Walter face
off? Check it out!
Review by anonymous (posted on 6-Jan-2007) Also known as 'Who Killed Charley Varrick'. An entirely satisfying crime caper, and Matthau was never better. As the brains of a small-time petty crime group comprised of Matthau, his on-screen wife, and Andy Hamilton as a brash, unthinking third man, a bank job goes wrong when they find themselves in possession of a large amount of money belonging to the Maffia - and they want it back! Knowing that simply giving back is not an option (as the Maffia would need to make an example of him) and desperately trying to keep one step ahead of Maffia hitman Joe Don Baker (whose actions are co-ordinated by on-site Maffia man John Vernon), Matthau relies on his skills as a stunt pilot and - mainly - his wits to escape with both the money and his life. Excellence all-round from both the plot and the actors.
