For his research into synapses, tiny nerve-cell junctions, Australian neurophysiologist John Eccles shared the 1963 Nobel Prize for Medicine with Alan L. Hodgkin and Andrew F. Huxley. Eccles studied under Charles Sherrington, and also worked with future Nobel laureate Ragnar Granit. He was influenced by the Karl Popper's philosophical teachings, and they co-authored The Self and its Brain.
