Military service: USMC (1942-46)

A conservative Republican, and outspoken opponent of welfare assistance. Unusually, he broke with mainstream Republicans in opposing the tax cuts of the 1980s, believing that doing so would make it impossible to balance the budget. Between 1947 and 1978, Olson maintained a farm of 750 acres in Kenosha County, with about 500 head of cattle. Subsequent to that, he moved to a farm of 160 acres in Bassett, and after his retirement from politics in 1982 relocated to Florida. Olson was the last Lt. Governor to preside over the Wisconsin Senate.
