Former Kansas Secretary of Agriculture, elected to the US Congress in 1995 and to the US Senate in 1997, filling the remainder of retired Senator Bob Dole's term. Re-elected in 1998 and 2004. Contended in Republican primaries for the 2008 Presidential nomination, and elected Governor of Kansas in 2010, succeeding Mark Parkinson.

In the Senate, supported regulation of violent television programming, supported the resolution for war on Iraq, opposed gay rights and gay marriage. Accepted $42K in contributions from later-convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

Wealthy through marriage; his wife's family formerly owned Stauffer Communications, a midwest newspaper and broadcasting conglomerate. Does not believe in evolution, but does believe in global warming. Converted to Catholicism in 2002, but contrary to public misconception he is not a member of the Opus Dei sect.
