Executive summary: Baby Tween dream Justin Bieber says he took some drum lessons before kindergarten, but taught himself to play the guitar, piano, and trumpet. He sang in his church, earned spare change working as a busker in front of the Avon Theater in his home town of Stratford, Ontario, and took second place in a local talent show in when he was 12. His mother started posting his videos on YouTube in July 2007, when he was 13, and the videos were hugely and instantly popular. Within six months he was signed to a contract with Island Records, and in 2013 he became the first recording artist to have five #1 albums before his 19th birthday.
Evidence suggests that Bieber is best buddies with Usher, who sang back-up vocals and appeared in the video for Bieber's first single, "One Time", and apparently owns a piece of Bieber's recording contract. To pursue his career, Bieber and his mother have moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where they live near Usher's home. In November 2009, Bieber told the Toronto Star that at Usher's suggestion a "swagger coach" had been hired, who "helps me and teaches me different swaggerific things to do".
In a shocking incident at the Maryland State Fair in September 2010, Bieber was seen throwing water balloons at state troopers working as crowd control for his concert. According to media reports, one of Bieber's liquid-filled latex projectiles struck a police officer's waist and burst, and another balloon bounced off a trooper's chest but did not burst. A state patrol spokesman said that this behavior was "inappropriate", but no official incident report was filed and Bieber was not charged.
