Alexander Cockburn (pronounced Coburn) was an expatriate Irishman who lived and worked in Northern California as a radical leftist journalist. He was utterly dissatisfied with the corporate-friendly policies of the Democratic party (as well as its former standard bearers Bill Clinton and Al Gore), and often extolled the virtues of Ralph Nader and the Green party. Cockburn was also the nemesis of fellow Nation columnist Eric Alterman, who evidently regarded Cockburn as a shameless liar.
