Kate WinsletAKA Kate Elizabeth Winslet

Born: 5-Oct-1975
Birthplace: Reading, England

Gender: Female
Race or Ethnicity: White
Sexual orientation: Straight
Occupation: Actor

Nationality: England
Executive summary: Titanic

Coming from a family of struggling stage actors, Kate Winslet started taking acting lessons at age 11, and within a few months she was dancing with the Honey Monster in TV commercials for Sugar Puffs. At 16 she was in the British sci-fi series Dark Season. At 18, she played Peter Jackson's "let's kill Mum" classic Heavenly Creature, opposite equally heavenly Melanie Lynskey. After several art house films like Sense and Sensibility, Jude, and Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet, she went sailing with Leonardo DiCaprio in Titanic. It was the highest-grossing film of all time.

Since then, Winslet has returned to the quiet side of cinema, doing mostly independent and arty films instead of blockbusters. In Holy Smoke, she stripped and urinated for Harvey Keitel. While making Hidious Kinky, she fell for and eventually married the assistant director. Then she met Sam Mendes, director of American Beauty, and promptly dumped husband #1 to make Mendes husband #2. She did Marquis de Sade's laundry in Quills, and forgot Jim Carrey in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. She did voice work for an animated Christmas Carol: The Movie in 2001, and her song "What If?" from the film was released as a single in Britain. All proceeds went to cancer charities.

Winslet has also been considered somewhat controversial for carrying half a handful of body fat on her fine frame, instead of psychotically dieting to stay perpetually rail-thin.

In early 2004, Winslet and Mendes left London and moved into a 14th-century manor in the English countryside, which they had purchased for about $6 million.
