First managed by Brian Epstein, having been hat-check girl at the Cavern Club where the Beatles played. Her stage name "Black" was not chosen by herself, instead deriving from a mistake made by the editor of Mersey Beat. Black had two #1 singles in the UK in 1964, "Anyone Who Had a Heart" and "You're My World", the latter which placed #26 on the Billboard Top 100 in America. As her singing career tapered, she remained beloved in Britain, hosting game shows and other entertainment programs.
