Leggy supermodel Naomi Campbell was born to an 18-year-old unmarried showgirl, and neither Campbell nor her mother have ever publicly named her father. She is of Jamaican-Chinese extraction, raised in a working-class neighborhood of London, and she was "discovered" by a fashion executive at 15 while window shopping in London's Covent Garden. Her breakthrough as a model was the cover shot for Elle in April 1986, and she later became the first black model to grace the cover of the French edition of Vogue. She says she does not always wear underwear, and noted actor Rupert Everett has said he would love to have Campbell's body.

Her acting debut came on The Cosby Show, playing a girl Theo yearned for, and she made her film debut singing behind the opening credits of Vanilla Ice's Cool as Ice in 1991. She has appeared in music videos for such artists as Jay-Z, Prince, Usher, George Michael, and Michael Jackson, and she co-owns Fashion Café in New York with fellow modeling superstars Elle Macpherson and Claudia Schiffer. Her 1994 novel Swan told the tale of a supermodel being blackmailed over dark secrets in her past. It is no secret, however, that the novel was actually written by a novelist, Caroline Upcher, and Campbell has explained, "I just did not have time to sit down and write a book". She has released a photo collection, Naomi, featuring pictures of Campbell taken by Richard Avedon and other leading fashion photographers. She recorded an album, Baby Woman, in 1995, and "La, La, La Love Song", her duet with hunky Asian singer Toshi, topped the charts in Japan. She made her theatrical debut in a 2001 San Francisco staging of The Vagina Monologues, and later performed the play in London.

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, which ravaged America's Gulf Coast in 2005, Campbell organized Fashion for Relief, with help from pals Cindy Crawford and Nicole Richie, and numerous models and designers. They put on a runway show, held an on-line auction, and sold Ralph Lauren T-shirts, with proceeds directed to the storm's victims. She reportedly works with the Dalai Lama foundation and UNESCO to fund construction of kindergartens for deprived children worldwide, and proceeds from her photo book are donated to the Red Cross Somalia Relief Fund. At a 2001 charity event honoring Nelson Mandela she engaged in a lingering liplock with fellow model Kate Moss.

Less charitably, Campbell battled London's Daily Mirror in court for several years, first losing but then winning on appeal of her claim that the paper invaded her privacy when it published photos showing her leaving a Narcotics Anonymous meeting.

In recent years, Campbell has made headlines for her temper tantrums, and has reportedly lost some modeling assignments from agencies and photographers unwilling to work with her. In 1999, after repeated whispers of her violent temper, she was briefly a guest at Cottonwood de Tucson, a detox and behavioral health facility, where she reportedly took lessons in anger management. In 2000, she was convicted of assaulting an assistant on a movie set. In 2002, she announced that she had kicked a long-term drug habit, explaining that the drugs had made her act abusive toward others. In 2003, a former assistant claimed that Campbell had thrown a phone at him in a fit of rage at a Beverly Hills hotel. In 2004, she was sued by a former assistant who alleged that she had been attacked and imprisoned by Campbell in 2001. In 2005, a longtime friend of Campbell, actress Yvonne Scio was briefly hospitalized, and alleged that Campbell had pinned her against a wall and punched her in the face several times. In a separate incident in 2005, she allegedly spat on a security guard who did not recognize her and blocked her from backstage access at a U2 concert.

It has been said that Campbell earned her nickname "Black Panther" from her temper. In 2006, she was charged with assault for throwing a jewel-encrusted cell phone at her housekeeper, causing a three-inch gash on the woman's forehead that required stitches, but Campbell alleged that the employee had stolen a pair of jeans. A lawsuit filed by a different former housekeeper later alleged very similar circumstances, this employee claiming to have been smacked in the back of the head over a pair of missing jeans. In July 2006 Campbell reportedly broke plates, ripped cushions, and pulled down curtains on her boyfriend Badr Jafar's yacht when the chef's tomato, mozzarella and dried ham delicacy displeased her. In October 2006 she was arrested for allegedly assaulting her drugs counselor.
