After four years studying drama at the University of Virginia, Tina Fey spent several years informally studying comedy. She was hired as a writer for Saturday Night Live's 1997-98 season, and was promoted to head writer in 1999. She began appearing in sketches and anchoring "Weekend Update" the following season. She was the show's first female head writer.

It took her two years to write Mean Girls, the barbed high school comedy based on a textbook (Rosalind Wiseman's Queen Bees and Wannabes: Helping Your Daughter Survive Cliques, Gossip, Boyfriends and Other Realities of Adolescence). From 2006-13 she played Liz Lemon, a fictionalized version of her SNL-era self, on NBC's 30 Rock with Alec Baldwin and Tracy Morgan.
