In that film Gregory gave playwright and friend Wallace Shawn an honest account of his mid-life crisis, his disappearance for several years of searching, and his subsequent spiritual enlightenment. As a stage director, Gregory received his best notices for a 1970 adaptation of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, and his minimalist production of Anton Chekhov's Uncle Vanya, which was filmed to art house acclaim as Vanya on 42nd Street, again co-starring Shawn.
