TweetAKA Charlene Keys

Born: 1972
Birthplace: Rochester, NY

Gender: Female
Race or Ethnicity: Black
Occupation: Singer

Nationality: United States
Executive summary: Southern Hummingbird

Tweet was born into a family of musicians, both of her parents having worked in gospel groups and all of her siblings being proficient with one or several instruments. Her own musical skills first began to develop while singing in church as a child, and it wasn't long before aspirations towards a career as a performer took root. This was not to come easily, however, and a significant portion of the 1990s was spent trapped in the girl group Sugar, enduring a succession of broken promises and an increasingly hopeless future. In the end the project was abandoned and Tweet -- suffering from a severe depression as a consequence of the experience -- returned to her parents' home in Florida, forced for a time to contemplate abandoning her dreams of stardom.

After an extremely bleak period spent struggling to find a direction to her life, Tweet received an unexpected respite in the form of an invitation from old friend Missy Elliott to sing on her upcoming album So Addictive. Missy subsequently took an interest in Tweet's own material and arranged a deal for the singer with Elektra through her own Gold Mind imprint. The result was the 2002 debut release Southern Hummingbird, a record which would reach #2 on the R&B charts and earn the singer a series of "best new artist" awards. A number of tracks (such as Motel) featured distinctive, spare arragements with the singer accompanying herself on acoustic guitar. The album also featured the raunchy Timbaland-produced single Oops (Oh My).
