Supporter of Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1932, after which he was appointed US Ambassador to Italy. During WWII, he captained the Visa Division at the US State Department, thwarting the entry into the United States of as many Jews as possible, as well as other East European refugees. From a direct result of Long's actions, countless thousands of lives were lost to the Holocaust. He is perhaps the greatest blight on that administration. Only in 1944 with Roosevelt's creation of the War Refugee Board was his power undermined.
