John Mendelsohn Born: 31-Aug-1936 Birthplace: Cincinnati, OH
Gender: Male Race or Ethnicity: White Sexual orientation: Straight Occupation: Biologist, Business Party Affiliation: Republican Nationality: United States Executive summary: Cancer researcher Dr John Mendelsohn is the President of the University of Texas's MD Anderson Cancer Center. He studied under James Watson, and his research led to the discovery of the mechanism by which blockade of epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptors inhibits cell proliferation. He has studied signal transduction pathways mediated by activated receptors, and made numerous other findings considered important in the battle against various forms of cancer, including the development of ImClone's anti-cancer drug Erbitux. The legal problems of lifestyle maven Martha Stewart stemmed from her sale of Imclone stock in 2001, the day before Erbitux was rejected by federal authorities.
Mendelsohn served on Enron's Board of Directors where, according to the New York Times, he had "a pivotal role in overseeing the company's relationship with its auditor, Arthur Andersen, and the integrity of the company's financial statements". His name was also briefly controversial in 2002, when it was revealed that patients undergoing clinical tests involving Erbitux at MD Anderson had not been told of the Mendelsohn's financial interest in the drug.
