Executive summary: First you see The Ring, then you die

Naomi Watts' early childhood was spent in England, where her father was a sound engineer for Pink Floyd. Her parents divorced when she was four, and for several years young Naomi and her brother and mother lived with her grandparents in Mold (a town in North Wales). Her father died when Watts was 9. When she was 14, her Welsh mother decided to move the family to Australia. After years of hearing her daughter ask, Watts was finally allowed to take acting classes when the family arrived in Australia. Eventually she dropped out of high school. At 18 she landed her first film work, a small part in the 1986 Australian drama, For Love Alone, starring Sam Neill.

Watts worked as a model, and it was five years before her second film, Flirting, with Nicole Kidman and Thandie Newton. Watts and Kidman had met years earlier at various auditions, and have been close friends since their mid-teens. After Flirting, Watts spent the next ten years making flops (Matinee, Tank Girl, Persons Unknown, etc.), while remaining a person unknown to audiences. Frustrated, Watts has said she was about ready to "jack it in" when David Lynch hired her for a TV pilot he was shooting. The pilot didn't sell, but Lynch reworked it into a bizarre 2001 thriller, Mulholland Drive. Watts had her greatest mainstream success in the thriller The Ring (2002). She was nominated for Best Actress for 21 Grams in 2003, and she screamed the Fay Wray role in Peter Jackson's 2005 remake of King Kong.
