[1] Born to an agnostic Jewish father and a Roman Catholic mother who also had Jewish ancestry. His mother died at Auschwitz, and his father was an inmate at Mauthausen. Certainly he was persecuted by the Nazis as a Jew. It is not clear what, if any, religious views Polanski currently possesses.
