New York Yankees

SPORTS FRANCHISE

Founded 1901 as the Baltimore Orioles, an original member of the American League (but not to be confused with the AL's present-day Orioles). Relocated and renamed the New York Highlanders in 1903, they were informally but commonly called the "Yankees" because they played in the new American League. Officially adopted that name in 1913.

American League champions in 1921, 1922, 1923, 1926, 1927, 1928, 1932, 1936, 1937, 1938, 1939, 1941, 1942, 1943, 1947, 1949, 1950, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1981, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2003, and 2009.
